DI SPORTSMANSHIP POLICY ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION

sportsmanship

SCI asked to assess and evaluate a DI university athletics department’s sportsmanship policy.

ASSESSMENT

SCI designed a survey and interview process after identifying the key stakeholders (university administration, athletic administration, student-athletes, coaching staff, training staff) to gather feedback on the existing policy and areas that would benefit from change or additions.

INTERVENTION

SCI gathered a Kaizen style event of all of the key stakeholders with an agenda formed from the initial survey process to rapidly change the policy. The largest areas of concern was that much of the existing policy was aspirational but not operational. There were many ways the policy could be interpreted and this was contributing as a source of conflict across a number of teams within the department. A common set of interests were developed to work toward an operational policy and specific consequences for not following this policy were established through consensus of the key stakeholders.

SUSTAINABILITY

The policy change resulted in a number of repeated conflicts to cease to exist and has proven to be a continued success.
